On 19 December 2024, the Albanian Parliament officially adopted the “Law on the Protection of Personal Data” with 74 votes in favour, marking a landmark achievement as the first piece of legislation in Albania fully harmonised with the European Union’s acquis. By adopting a comprehensive approach aligned with EU standards, the new law seeks to significantly enhance privacy protection within the national framework.
The law will come into force 15 days after its publication in the Official Gazette. However, certain provisions—such as those concerning Data Protection Impact Assessments and prior consultations with the Commissioner—will only take effect two years after its publication, allowing stakeholders sufficient time to adapt to these new requirements.
