Belgrade Open Pre-Moot & Arbitration Conference: Preparing Future Legal Experts

With the 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot approaching, Belgrade recently hosted a series of events dedicated to young legal talents. Over the weekend, the XVII DIS/Belgrade Open Pre-Moot took place, once again organised by the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law. This Pre-Moot provided law students with another opportunity to refine their arbitration skills in a competitive setting.

The activities began on Friday, 4 April, when XV Belgrade Arbitration Conference took place at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Our Partner Milica Savić moderated the panel on “Legal Privilege, Admissibility, and Procedural Challenges in Arbitration”, along with colleagues Greta Körner (WilmerHale, UK), Parvan Parvanov (I.A. Chambers, USA),  Shane Daly (Bredin Prat, France), Katarina Živković (SOG Kinstellar, Serbia), and Đorđe Novčić (JPM & Partners, Serbia).

Our Senior Associate Filip Šušulić participated in the panel named “Blueprints for Resolution: Navigating FIDIC Contracts and Construction Arbitration” alongside Chris Seppälä (Seppälä Arbitration, France), Milan Dakić (BDK Advokati, Serbia, and Sally Kottb (BakerMcKenzie, USA). The discussion was moderated by Jovan Nikčević (Nikčević Kapor Law Office, Serbia).

In addition to the conference, the Pre-Moot programme featured several related events designed to enrich the experience for young professionals and foster peer-to-peer exchange. Among them was the “Under 40 Arbitration Association Conference – Arbitration in a Changing World – Key Industries & Skills that Matter”, which also formed part of the Pre-Moot agenda. Our Senior Associate Milica Volarev, as the co-chair of Serbian Arbitration Association, organised this conference, contributing her experience to the wider dialogue on the future of arbitration.

On Friday night, Karanović & Partners hosted the Pre-Moot Opening Night, welcoming participants with a lively gathering. This year, 60 teams from 30 countries joined the event.

Throughout the weekend, we provided guidance and support as teams prepared for the final rounds of the competition, set to take place in Vienna from 11 to 17 April. Multiple hearing rounds fostered insightful exchanges among future legal professionals from around the world.

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting young talent, we are proud to continue backing the Belgrade Open Pre-Moot, recognising its vital role in shaping the next generation of legal experts.
