On 10 November 2016 Karanović & Nikolić and Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom proudly organised another competition law conference in Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade, under this year’s name – Focus on Competition – Celebrating the First Decade. This is the 11th annual conference dedicated to competition law, which traditionally gathers various experts from the business, legal and consulting communities, as well as key regulators and stakeholders, to discuss the most important issues and practical implications in this important area of legislation. This years’ novelty was the celebration of the first decade of Focus on Competition, the most relevant publication on competition law in SEE region. This anniversary edition is prepared in English and in German, making this the first time a German version is being published since the book was first released in 2007.
Like every year, this event gathered around 100 experts interested in contemporary issues of competition law and its practical implications in the region. Mr. Rastko Petaković, Senior Partner at Karanović & Nikolić, opened the conference with a short referral on the past and current situation in competition law in Serbia, leaving the floor to the key note speakers – Dr. Miloje Obradović, President of the Serbian competition authority, Mr. Andrej Matvoz, Acting Director of the Slovenian competition authority and Ms. Andijana Ćurčić, President of the Serbian state aid authority. After the short retrospective of 10 previous editions of Focus on Competition and its evolution throughout the years, the discussion continued on to two fruitful panels – the first one that was focused on the past and the future of competition law, and the second one dedicated to the impacts of Brexit on the EU and acceding countries within the framework of competition law.
The panelist speakers included prominent experts and our distinguished guests from Serbia and abroad – Mr. Rainer Kaltenbrunner, Economist at the Austrian Federal Competition Authority, Mr. Michael Cousin, Partner at Ashurst Paris, Ms. Marijana Poznan, Director of Legal and HR at Fresenius Medical Care, Dr. Siniša Milošević, the Chief Economist at the Serbian competition authority, prof. Tanja Miščević, Chief Negotiator for Accession of Serbia to the EU, Mr. Bojan Vučković, Partner at Karanović & Nikolić, and Mr. Andrew MacDowall, correspondent and analyst for Politico, the Financial Times and the Guardian, as the moderator.
