Exploring the Future of the Internet

Insights from the 2025 DIDS Conference

The 15th anniversary of the Domain Names of Serbia Conference (DIDS 2025) was held on 19 March in Belgrade. Local and international experts – industry leaders from technology, law, and business – gathered to exchange knowledge and visions about the future of the digital space. Under the slogan “Back to the Future,” this year’s conference provided a comprehensive insight into the trends and challenges that will shape the internet in the years to come, within a platform for discussions on digital governance, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and the future of the global digital economy.

Our Senior Partner Rastko Petaković participated in a panel focused on the intersection of law and technology. He shared insights on the need for legal frameworks to evolve in line with technological advancements, particularly in data protection and online services, and the conventional and unconventional regulatory efforts in this field, focusing on matters like AI, privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity.

He was joined by other speakers, including Christian Kaufmann, from ICAAN, a US corporation that coordinates the global system of internet domains and IP addresses, and Mika Tasić, a creative technologist. The panel was moderated by Danko Jevtović, from ICAAN.

They contributed to a broader conversation on the regulatory challenges posed by rapid technological developments. Together, the panellists discussed the tried-and-tested standardisation efforts and the challenges these efforts now face from intervention by state actors and the sheer financial and technological power of Big Tech.

The discussions highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration in shaping legal standards that foster both innovation and security in the digital world. The speakers’ diverse perspectives provided a comprehensive view of how technology, law, and business must work together to create sustainable digital practices.
