Istrian Y Milestone

Učka Tunnel Opening Ceremony Marked in Croatia

The second tube of Učka tunnel, a key component of the Istrian Y motorway, officially opened for traffic, marking a significant advancement in the infrastructure connecting Istria with the rest of Croatia. This tunnel is part of an extensive project that links Pula with Umag and Rijeka, facilitating greater ease of travel and supporting the region’s tourism and economic growth. The second tube of the tunnel, which took three years to complete, is one of the most modern and well-equipped in the country, significantly enhancing Croatia’s transport infrastructure.

Our colleagues Iva Tokić Čuljak and Ivana Sverak Partners from Ilej & Partners, in cooperation with Karanovic & Partners, who advised the lead arrangers in restructuring of the existing facilities granted for the Istrian Y concession motorway project, attended the opening ceremony to mark this important milestone.

The opening follows the amendments to the concession agreement  signed in 2023 between the Republic of Croatia and Bina-Istra d.d.

The project, which is expected to be completed over the next few years, will further improve transport links across the Istrian peninsula. Once the Istrian Y motorway is fully operational, travelers will be able to drive from Zagreb to Pula in just two and a half hours, linking Istria to both Croatia and Europe as part of the Trans-European Transport Network.
